In the sky, about thirty miles from her, over the Syugechan, an object floated, not lending itself to comprehension. Something about it made her lose her grip on the nightstand and look with her mouth open at this brilliance. Something about this justified worship. She could not help being afraid - but also, somehow, love ran through her veins.

The object stretched far into the upper atmosphere, as if it had descended from outer space to unleash its outlandish manifesto on Earth. It was a perverted deity; in its black clouds of swirling gas, she could barely see the black, purulent tentacles squeezing out from the central node. The cities of muscles rotated inward endlessly into the hole that was its mouth. Its feet, hundreds of feet in length, rotated chaotically when MiG-23 bombers rushed to it like flies to paper.

She noticed then that the black rain falling over Yukagir tasted of bile.
